How to pick a splash pad, and what to bring

The AllPlayful team · 2 min read · Updated Oct 2026

A splash pad is a playground you can't wear out your kid on without also cooling them down. No standing water, no lifeguard, and usually free. A little planning makes the difference between a great afternoon and a soggy, sunburned one.

What to look for

Not every splash pad suits every age. Before you head out, check three things.

Who it's built for. Some pads have gentle ground sprayers that toddlers can walk through. Others have tall jets and dumping buckets that bigger kids love and little ones find scary. If you have a mix of ages, look for a pad with a calmer corner.

Shade and seating. Hot concrete and a bright sky are hard on everyone. A shade structure, trees or a bench in the shade means you can sit down while still keeping an eye on the water. You can filter for shade structures on AllPlayful.

Bathrooms close by. Wet kids need to change, and everyone needs a bathroom after a few hours of drinking from the sprayers. Check whether there is a bathroom on site before you commit to the whole afternoon.

Also worth a quick look: opening hours and season. Many splash pads run only in warm months and some switch off at a set time, so check the city or park website before a long drive.

What to bring

  • Towels. One per kid, plus a spare. Wet towels are better than none.
  • Water shoes or sandals with grip. Wet surfaces get slippery, and bare feet get hot.
  • Sunscreen and a hat. Reapply after a few rounds in the water.
  • A full water bottle. Splash pad water is for playing, not for drinking.
  • A dry change of clothes and a bag for the wet ones.
  • A snack. Water play burns energy fast.

Making it go smoothly

Arrive early on a hot day. Pads fill up by late morning and the sun is hardest in the afternoon. Keep little ones within arm's reach, even though the water is shallow, and watch for slick spots near the jets. If your child is nervous, let them watch for a few minutes first. Most come around on their own.
